Hallyu, a popularly known as the Korean wave, continues to cast its spell in the Philippines. Not only are Korean dramas being embraced by Filipinos but more teens and young adults are becoming ardent fans of K-pop artist as well.
All the way from South Korea, K-pop was born in the Philippines indirectly through the rise of Koreanovelas in 2003; some of these Koreanovelas that first aired in the Philippines television are Endless Love, My Sassy Girl and Full House which really hooked the Filipino televiewers.
K-pop is a musical genre consisting of electronic, hip-hop, pop, rock, and R&B music originating in South Korea. It is rapidly inching its way to the Philippine Music Industry. As of today there are numerous K-pop performers that are close to the Filipino hearts. Among the most famous are U-kiss, Super Junior, Girls Generation, TVXQ, Shinee, and Wonder Girls. As you noticed almost all of them are idol group. Their songs are really famous now and probably are closing to international artists. Even though most Filipino do not understand Korean it’s really surprising that they even go the extra mile and show effort to learn their language. K-pop started to proliferate the airwaves in the world for the fist time, in the year 2009 when Wonder Girls place in the US Billboard hot 100 for their single Nobody.
Two of the most popular boy group in K-pop is Shinee and TVXQ. Both group captivated the hearts of every Filipina. TVXQ was crowned as the Kings of K-pop while Shinee is Korea’s first boy band lead by Jong hyun.
Aside from K-pop dramas and music, Korean fashion is also in among teenagers and young adults throughout the world resulting in widespread interest in their style and looks.
